LynxSecure designed for future EAL-7 certification, the highest level of embedded security; courses to be taught by LynuxWorks experts on security topics
EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE (ESC), BOSTON, Mass., BOOTH #1021, Sept. 13, 2005—At ESC Boston, LynuxWorks™ Inc. will conduct a technology demonstration of its LynxSecure separation kernel. Designed to meet the needs for the highest level of embedded software security, LynxSecure uses the space and time partitioning features of LynxOS®-178 safety-critical real-time operating system (RTOS) to provide the foundation for building highly secure systems utilizing the MILS (Multiple Independent Levels of Security) architecture. LynxSecure is designed for certification to Common Criteria EAL-7 (Evaluated Assurance Level 7) as well as DO-178B level A.
LynuxWorks will demonstrate LynxSecure, LynxOS-178, LynxOS v4.0, BlueCat® v5.1 and its complete family of embedded software security products. LynuxWorks will be the first in industry to introduce LynxSecure separation kernel with BlueCat Linux® running in a partition, as a guest operating system, along with a safety-critical demonstration introducing LynuxWorks' support of the Intel® IA-32 architecture for DO-178B applications.
"We are definitely proud to be showcasing our security prowess at ESC Boston," Dr. Inder Singh, CEO and chairman of LynuxWorks. "From our FCS (Future Combat System) win to shipping our new, breakthrough products like LynxSecure, we really have had an incredible year—and ESC will continue that momentum for us. Customers will continue to look to LynuxWorks as the market leader in embedded software security."
The LynxSecure separation kernel provides a migration path for current LynuxWorks customers and supports software reuse by enabling BlueCat Linux and LynxOS-178 to run in user mode within LynxSecure partitions. This makes it very easy to support any existing Linux or POSIX® software applications within a highly robust secure system based on LynxSecure.
Many defense systems that handle unclassified and classified information of different levels of classification must support Multi Level Security (MLS) and meet the highest levels of information assurance. The move toward Network Centric Warfare (NCW) and toward interconnection of many defense systems to a Global Information Grid (GIG) will increase the need for Multi Level Security. Similar security requirements are increasingly found in commercial systems such as financial networks and the national infrastructure.
LynxSecure is designed to provide a scalable solution ranging from embedded systems to workstations and servers that can be applied to applications in embedded avionics products, weapons systems, C4ISR data systems as well as critical infrastructure control systems.
On Tuesday, September 13 from 8:30am to 10:00am, Paul Farmer, Senior Systems Engineer, LynuxWorks, will teach Network Security for Embedded Systems. This course will cover topics such as network security protocols (and when and where they are used), the software and hardware requirements for implementation, network protocol vulnerabilities, embedded system designs, and the benefits of open source.
Arun Subbarao, Director, Technology and Product Development, LynuxWorks, will instruct the course Designing FIPS 140 Compliance into Embedded Systems on Tuesday, September 13 from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. This course will offer attendees a better understanding of the requirements placed on embedded system designs to achieve FIPS 140 compliance. Federal government agencies are now required to use cryptographic products that have "Strong Security"—meaning they have been FIPS 140 validated or Common Criteria (CC) validated. This requirement has put new demands on the OEM software developer. This class explains how these FIPS requirements affect the design of embedded designs and the development process.
